I have always experienced the world in my own way — painting from imagination, memory, and feeling rather than just what my eyes show me. Creating began as a quiet, personal joy to turn the beauty I imagine into something real. When I began sharing my work, I realised these designs could bring warmth and happiness to other people's homes too. Maddy Dobson Designs was born to turn the stories in my mind into patterns, textiles, and art for everyone to love.
A distinctive way of seeing
Even though I am registered blind, I still have sight — just in my own way. I experience the world through a unique lens, blending what I can see with memory, intuition, and vivid imagination. This perspective helps me notice elements others might overlook: colour, texture, rhythm, and feeling above fine detail. Drawing inspiration from nature, my French heritage, the Isle of Wight, and cherished antique family plates, I reimagine these influences into soft, distinctive patterns and original artwork.
Shaped by the Isle of Wight
Living and working in Cowes on the Isle of Wight provides constant inspiration. The soft coastal light, ever-changing skies, wild flowers, and gentle rhythm of the sea are woven through everything I create. I feel the island's palette everywhere — the pale gold of sand, deep blue water, and soft green fields. Surrounded by quiet landscapes and seasonal transitions, my work naturally inherits a calm, warm, and timeless character that comes straight from home.
